Time to Form an Orderly Q

AUDI has opened the order book for its eagerly-awaited new Q2 range, which it hopes will attract a new generation of younger families to the delights of SUVs.

The newcomer is its smallest SUV to date, with all of the benefits of traditional 4x4s, but without the bulk in terms of both size and price.

The entry-level model costs PS20,230, which is actually less than many mainstream rivals, albeit with an engine just one litre and three cylinders.

However, thanks to latest turbocharging techniques it still manages to pack quite a punch, with a power output of 115bhp.

This version arrives here later in the year, alongside a four-cylinder 2.0litre turbodiesel.

From today, however, the order book is open for the 150bhp 1.4-litre petrol and 115bhp 1.6 turbodiesel versions with either a six-speed manual or seven-speed S tronic transmission.

A 1.6 TDI S tronic will then be available from September. The 1.4 TFSI uses Cylinder on Demand technology to reduce fuel consumption by deactivating the second and third cylinders during partial loads and when coasting.

As a result, up to 55mpg is achievable, with emissions of 119g/km. Acceleration to 60mph takes 8.5 seconds, with a top speed of 130mph.

The 1.6 TDI is even more efficient, returning up to 65mpg with 114g/km of CO2, a 0-60mph time of 10.3 seconds and a 122mph top speed.

As an alternative to the six-speed manual transmission, the S tronic dual clutch transmission with seven speeds is offered for all engines bar the 1.0 TFSI, and is standard on the 2.0 TDI.

From next summer a 2.0-litre petrol engine mated to quattro all-wheel-drive and S tronic transmission will be added, at which point it will also be possible to combine the 150bhp TDI and TFSI engines with 4WD.

The new vehicle measures 1.51 metres tall and 1.79 metres wide. The overhangs are short with a vehicle length of 4.19 metres and a wheelbase of 2.60 metres.

Three specification levels are offered, with entry-level SE versions having smartphone interface, which supports Apple CarPlay and Android Auto displayed via the MMI screen when a phone is plugged in via the USB. …
