Paperbarks Get the Axe; Council Cuts20 Trees Tohalt Damage

TWENTY trees have been removed from a Dundowran Beach street after residents complained about the damage the paperbarks were causing.

Dundowran Beach resident Sue Brooks said she was disappointed at the council's decision to remove the trees from Arkarra Court, which the Fraser Coast Council estimated would cost about $20,000.

The $20,000 bill includes cutting down the trees and planting appropriate replacements.

Fraser Coast councillor Rolf Light said the decision to remove the trees had been made after the paperbarks' "aggressive" root system started to cause damage to surrounding infrastructure.

He said the paperbarks, which had been planted by the estate developer, were being removed in compliance with the Tree Management Policy as they were an unsuitable species for street planting and were damaging properties.

"About two years ago it cost council about $15,000 to repair damage to driveways in the street and more damage was expected," Cr Light said. …
