Babysnatcher Who Stole Girl 19 Years Ago Is Jailed

A WOMAN was today jailed for 10 years in South Africa for kidnapping a baby 19 years ago.

The woman, 51, from Cape Town, snatched the baby while her mother slept days after giving birth in the city's Groote Schuur Hospital on April 27, 1997.

The child was called Zephany by her parents Celeste and Morne Nurse, but the name she grew up with has not been released to protect her identity and the name of her kidnapper has not been revealed for the same reason.

In March, Judge John Hlophe convicted the woman of kidnapping and fraud, and of contravening the Children's Act.

The woman maintained in her testimony that she had not been at the hospital on the day the baby was kidnapped.

The woman was arrested in February 2015 after Cassidy, the girl's sister, who is four years younger, told her parents that a girl at her school bore a striking resemblance to her and her parents.

The Nurses contacted the police and DNA tests confirmed that she was their biological daughter. …
