METRO delays threw a couple's holiday plans into chaos after a power surge caused them to miss their flight.

Judith and Peter Smith have had to fork out for new flights and miss two days of their summer break to Madeira, which was paid for with money left behind by Peter's mother after her death.

The couple, who both work as psychiatric nurses, were caught up in the Metro chaos after a power surge shut down the network on Monday lunchtime.

After an hour and a half stuck on a carriage between Gateshead Stadium and Gateshead, the train was evacuated and the couple flagged down a taxi to rush them to Newcastle Airport. The couple arrived at the airport at 3pm - just 10 minutes before their flight took off - but it was too late to board.

"I am still in bits about it, I have been crying. You just cannot trust the Metro," Judith, 53, of Sunderland, said.

They contacted their travel agent, Hays Travel, who arranged alternative flights from Manchester Airport today at a cost of PS340.

The couple claim that, when contacted by Hays, Nexus offered only to refund the two PS3.20 single Metro tickets and said they can't take responsibilty for them missing the flight.

Judith said: "We've spent PS70 on taxis, we're having to pay for petrol to get to Manchester and we're having to pay for a hotel the night before because the flight is so early and all they will give us is a few quid."

Around 100 people were rescued by firefighters after becoming stuck on a train underground near Monument, while passengers were led to safety at Gosforth and Gateshead.

Judith said: "It took two minutes to walk back to the station, but an hour and a half for them to decide to let us get off. I understand health and safety but they took too long to decide what to do. …
