Scammers Move with Times; Fair Trading Commissioner Says Best Defence Is for Targets to Harden Up

SCAMS are increasing in number and sophistication but the best defence is still the old school way of making yourself a harder target.

The NSW Fair Trading Commissioner Rob Stowe said his organisation was having some success battling scammers, but making the target harder was the most effective deterrent.

"The problem for us is many of them are generated overseas," Mr Stowe said.

"In many areas the telephone calls people get, it's quite an organised, large scale enterprise."

He said automatic dialling technology allowed scammers to set a prefix number then dial consecutive numbers.

"They might be ringing a prefix for the Clarence Valley and all of a sudden we're getting lots of complaints from around your area.

"What that does allow is for people to report it to Fair Trading or Scamwatch it does gives us the opportunity to let other people know there's a scam in your area. …
