THE early signs for a project to dual the A69 are not especially encouraging - but we must not let ourselves be put off by that.

A strategic study into the A69 and the A66 reveals, to no one's surprise, that they will be expensive projects, with dualling the A69 likely to be a more costly project than the more southern link.

Governments in general do not like costly projects. And they also tend to reach for those offering more chance of short-term gains.

Those who back the plan to upgrade the A69 will have their work cut out in pressing their case.

However, that is what we must all do.

The A69 is a key link for the urban North East, not just to Carlisle, but to Glasgow and the west side of Scotland. Anyone who uses it regularly knows that from the point where the dual carriageway runs out just west of Hexham it is a long drag to the M6. …
