TWO sides who have enjoyed the glory and excitement of playing at Wembley in the FA Carlsberg Vase clashed in the preliminary round of the FA Cup at the Daren Persson stadium on Saturday.

It was a tense affair before Morpeth Town emerged victors over North Shields, with the only goal midway through the opening half from Michael Chilton.

Newcastle Benfield also had a close call but were delighted with the victory they achieved at Padiham, for whom Reece Pearce cancelled out Michael Coghlan's first-half strike.

The game remained nip and tuck and after Paul Brayson gave the Tynesiders the lead, they had to defend resolutely for a 2-1 victory.

It was not easy for Consett either but they came through unscathed against Clitheroe in Lancashire.

Clark Kay scored the only goal after 15 minutes but the Steelmen could have given themselves a bigger cushion had Lewis Teasdale converted a 54th-minute penalty.

Washington ended with only nine men but managed to earn a replay at Pickering Town tomorrow night.

Twice behind to strikes by Nick Thompson and Mattie Turnbull, the Mechanics replied courtesy of Anthony Callaghan and Mark Davison (pen). They had Andrew Brown sent off in the 45th minute and Lewis Galpin was red-carded three minutes from the end.

Dunston UTS will also be involved in a replay, against Penrith in Cumbria on Wednesday.

After taking the lead through Dan Halliday, they went 3-1 down as Jamie Street, Martyn Coleman and Richard Faustino replied.

But in a storming finish, Billy Irwin's men struck twice courtesy of Scott Heslop and Malcolm Morien.

Chester-le-Street bowed out to Marske United, who just about wrapped up the tie in the first 30 minutes, by which stage they led through Jamie Owens, Reece Kelly and a Danny Earl penalty. Early in the second half, Matthew Bell made it four. …
