07:11 Boy in hospital after car collision A schoolboy was fighting for his life in hospital after being hit by a car. The eight-year-old was airlifted to hospital following the incident, which happened in North Shields.

The Great North Air Ambulance Service (GNAAS) helicopter landed on a grassed area near Hartington Road on Marden Estate to help the boy.

The lad, who is from North Shields, suffered multiple injuries including head and leg injuries.

He was treated at the scene by the GNAAS paramedic and doctor team and anaesthetised before being flown to Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle.

The flight took six minutes.

The patient's condition was described as critical on arrival at hospital.

10:20 Bus and taxi crash A taxi and a bus collided at a junction on Wallsend High Street. Motorists were warned to approach the area with care but there were not thought to be any serious injuries.

10:48 Crash near Tyne Bridge A red car crashed into the side of the carriageway on the approach to the Tyne Bridge. The car, which was facing the wrong direction, had been travelling along the Central Motorway towards the bridge when it appears to have spun out of control at the turn off for the Swanhouse Roundabout. The incident was cleared within 45 minutes.
