THE AUGUST FLYING: Trainer Matthew Dunn said the best way for Red Bowers to win today's Coutts Crossing Cup Day The August Flying (1200m) at Clarence River Jockey Club will be from the rear of the field.

The Murwillumbah trainer decided to change his tactics with Red Bowers a few starts back and he believes that, despite a small field, his horse should get every chance to run over the top of his rivals.

"We've been trying to ride him a bit quieter of late so he can hit the line, which he's achieving well, and we'll probably go with the same tactics on Thursday as long as the race is run to suit," Dunn said.

"I'd like to keep him racing in the Northern Rivers because you're normally guaranteed a good tempo up here so it can be an advantage to go back.

"If he gets the tempo you don't need luck when you go back. He'll just come out and finish off well and the 1200 metres is his right distance now. …
