PLANS for a new beachfront restaurant between Lighthouse and Shelly beaches at Ballina could be shelved, with the developer telling the council the project is no longer viable.

Fishheads @ Byron bought Shelly's on the Beach cafe in 2011.

The owners announced plans to demolish the existing building to make way for a contemporary 120-seat restaurant.

But since then the project has stalled.

Now the developer is asking Ballina Shire Council to help pay for the new restaurant to ensure it goes ahead.

In June last year Fishheads agreed to a 20-year lease of the Shelly's on the Beach cafe site, stating that a long term lease would help to secure the finance needed to construct the proposed new restaurant.

Fishheads also asked the council, as the landowner, to pay for all costs associated with relocating a stormwater pipe on the site.

The issues will be discussed at the council's meeting today, with a staff report explaining there is "uncertainty as to whether or not Fishheads will proceed with the redevelopment proposal". …
