Somerset Continues Good Run with Huge Bass Landed

Article excerpt

SOMERSET DAM

SOMERSET has continued its good form this week with plenty of huge bass landed in the deep.

School fish over the 3kg mark have been landed on a daily basis.

The schools of bass have been found in around 25ft near the Kirkleigh area and around the spit point.

Sinking lures and deep-diving hard bodies have worked best.

Trolling around these areas is a good way to catch fish and locate the school for cast and retrieve tailspinners have stood out as the best lure using a slow roll just off the bottom.

For the bait angler, live shrimp will be the best bait by far.

LAKE DYER

LOCATED just near Laidley, Lake Dyer is around only 7% full at the moment and is closed to all water activities except kayak fishing and land-based fishing.

The low water level has really congregated the fish into the deep holes.

Once located the fishing is exceptional with lots of good-size bass and yellowbelly being taken on all sorts of baits and lures.

We found jigging the ZX blades worked great for the yellowbelly while soft plastics and mask vibes worked better for the bass.

For the bait angler, live shrimp and saltwater yabbies have been most productive.

LAKE BARAMBAH

THERE is a mixture of schooled fish and resident edge fish at Barambah.

If you can locate the schools, the fishing is great although the sizes have been down a little while the edges have continued to fish well for the better quality fish.

Casting suspending hard-body lures to the edges and around the timbers will tempt those resident fish.

Trolling has still been a bit quiet although picking up as the water gets warmer.

For the bait angler, live shrimp and saltwater yabbies have again been the bait of choice.

LESLIE DAM

LESLIE is back on the map after a slow period.

This week has shown the fish are moving again with anglers catching plenty of good sized yellowbelly even from land-based areas.

The saltwater yabbies have been the best bait while jigging ZX blades out from the points and over any submerged rocks has been a great technique.

Trolling mid-level diving lures around the edges has started to produce fish and will only get better as it warms up. …
