Pickford Must Take His Chance Says Boss

DAVID Moyes insists there is an "awful lot of faith" in Jordan Pickford at Sunderland.

However, the Black Cats boss says now is the time for the 22-year-old to take his chance, take responsibility for his development and negotiate the enhanced demands of the Premier League and progress "very quickly" into a top-flight goalkeeper.

Vito Mannone's elbow injury means Pickford will start only his fifth senior game for the Wearside outfit at Southampton today and just his third in the league.

Moyes has confirmed Mannone's likely three-month absence with an elbow ligament problem will force him to search for another shotstopper as either competition for or back-up to Pickford.

In the meantime, the Scot says the 6ft 1in goalkeeper must prove himself up to the speed of the Premier League.

Moyes said: "Jordan has a period now where he has to grow up from being a young goalkeeper into a Premier League goalkeeper, first of all.

"I've introduced a lot of young players into the first team and they have to take it on very quickly - and as a goalkeeper even more so because you're nearly questioning all the things you do. …
