DURHAM judoka Alex Hampshire is aiming to be at the peak of his powers by winning gold at the School Games.

The tournament is the first Games the 17-year-old is attending and it provides the opportunity for him to represent England rather than Gateshead Judo Club, where he trains day to day.

A high-performance event for elite youth athletes and a key step on the road to senior success for Team GB's next generation of athletes, the School Games - which runs from September 1-4 - is supported by National Lottery funding from Sport England and delivered by the Youth Sport Trust.

The Games has built up a reputation for highlighting the best young talent in the UK over the past years and Hampshire will be eager to make his mark on that stage.

He said: "I think the competition will be very tough, so will be a bit of a test.

"The importance of the competition is up there with the Nationals really because of the build-up.

" I went to a camp a few days ago and there were a lot of people talking about it and a lot of people know about it. …
