Before the CQUniversity Cairns Taipans and the Perth Wildcats go head-to-head on Saturday, they will hit the court at Hegvold Stadium tomorrow night. That game starts at 7pm. For tickets call Rockhampton Basketball on 4922 5544.

BASKETBALL: Homegrown hero Stephen Weigh will be a key player as the CQUniversity Cairns Taipans and the Perth Wildcats line up for their 2016 NBL showdown in Rockhampton on Saturday night.

After starting his basketball career at Rockhampton's very own Hegvold Stadium as a kid, Weigh went on to spend time at the Australian Institute of Sport and played college basketball in the USA before entering the NBL as part of the Perth Wildcats.

He then went on to play for the Adelaide 36ers before signing up with the CQUniversity Cairns Taipans, where he is now about to enter his fourth season.

"It's especially exciting playing for a Queensland-based NBL team in such a patriotic place as Rocky," Weigh said.

"There'll be plenty of friends there and mates, as well as junior basketballers who may only have heard of Rockets players who've gone through the system into the pros. It'll be great to play and perform in front of those kids too."

Sports lovers have the chance to watch the exciting pre-season Taipans-Wildcats match-up in the 2000-seat indoor sports stadium on CQUniversity Rockhampton North campus. Gates open at 6pm for a 7pm tip-off.

CQUni Interim Vice-Chancellor Professor Hilary Winchester has lauded the partnership between CQUniversity, Rockhampton Regional Council and Rockhampton Basketball which has brought the game to fruition.

"We are now a truly national university, however our heritage and headquarters remain firmly based in Central Queensland and it is fantastic that our support of a national sporting team allows us to bring an event like this to our home town," Prof Winchester said.

"It is timely that our game rivals for 2016 are the Perth Wildcats, as CQUniversity Australia has this year expanded into Western Australia with four locations now in Perth, Karratha, Broome and Busselton. …
