AND so it would appear that Newcastle City Council finally saw sense in the teeth of strong local opposition and decided to scrap its plans to build on the Town Moor at Gosforth.

But notwithstanding this apparent volte face, several serious questions remain unanswered.

Such as whose idea was this grotesque development in the first place? And just how much taxpayer's money was squandered on it? One can only begin to imagine the cost of officers' time, the hiring/paying of civil engineers, and what about planners and architects as well? And that's not even mentioning those members of staff carrying out road surverys and the like.

Furthermore, the silence from the Freemen of Newcastle was horribly deafening.

Not a single squeack could be heard from this august body which is meant to be protetcting the moors in perpetuity for the people of this city.

We still do not know whether or not they backed the scheme.

And if they did, did they not realise that ths would, not doubt, have been the thin end of a very thick wedge. …
