DOES Newcastle need to fork out for a review into its bin collection failings? The city council thinks so, and has ordered an independent review five months after introducing cost-cutting new working practices. Bin collections have been consistently missed across the city since April, when the new refuse plan was brought in.

Some wondered why the council needs to pay for a review instead of just sorting out the problem.

Diane Savory wrote: "The whole of Newcastle is a disgrace, the street bins are all overflowing, I am sick of phoning Envirocall to be told there is no money to empty the bins in the street. It's only August - what is the council doing with the council tax that is allocated for waste collection? Keith Calvert posted: "Don't need the government to spend more taxpayers' money on inspectors, just get the council to control its workforce and do a proper job. …
