Council Sets Charge to Empty Green Bins

A PS35 charge for the collection of green bins has been set.

The controversial introduction of a charging policy for green waste in Stokesley, Great Ayton and Hutton Rudby was agreed by Hambleton District Council earlier this year.

But the members of the district Council's Cabinet have now decided what the charge will be - a fee of PS35 a year to be introduced from April 1, 2017.

The scheme, which will help meet the council's PS1m saving target, will be on an annual voluntary subscription basis - meaning only bins from households that pay the fee will be emptied.

The charges bring Hambleton in line with other North Yorkshire boroughs - five of the seven already charge.

However, this is not the case across Teesside where green waste is still collected by local councils for free.

Hambleton District Council introduced a free garden waste collection service 12 years ago as part of a national government drive to boost recycling rates. …
