THE 14th London Design Festival starts on Saturday September 17 and runs for nine days. London Mayor Sadiq Khan, who is actively fostering the arts and design in the capital, sees it as a "core priority". He says: "London is home to the design world's greatest innovators, practitioners and educators.

"By showcasing and promoting their work, the festival lets people from all walks of life experience why London really is the design capital of the world." V&A: THE LAUNCH PAD Cromwell Road, South Kensington, SW7 (vam.ac.uk; @V_and_A) HEAD first to the Victoria & Albert Museum, the official festival "hub", to pick up your free guide and join a free tour. Talks and workshops here have changing themes -- eg Makers (Sept 20) and Digital Design (weekend, Sept 24-25). The Green Room, above, by London design duo Glithero, is spectacular, with a fringe of coloured threads revolving around a classical staircase. Late night: Friday September 23, until 10pm.

In the square itself are eight large themed "Monopoly houses", including one where online design forum Houzz will demonstrate "smart" home technology. A ticket admits to the Canopy, with 70 traders selling homewares, fashion, tech and textiles. At Cubitt House over 100 brands showcase their newest lines. At the weekend meet experts from YOSTEAM.COM, a new YouTube channel promoting tech and science for everyday life, and join the Human Imagination Task Force for a virtual reality experience.
