Plaque Honors Couple Who Died in Car Crash

Dear Call Box: I am curious about the plaque in the back of V Pizza at 12601 San Jose Blvd. Previously, that site was a child care center, and the plaque is in the middle of the playground area that is still there. I know there used to be a Lee and Mimi Adams Environmental Award, and I'm wondering if this is connected to that. If not, who installed it, when and why is it there? I called V Pizza, but no one there knew about it.

Dear A.M.: The picture you sent of the plaque on a wooden stake reads: "In loving remembrance of Mimi and Lee Adams, Nov. 16, 1971. Two lovers and guardians of nature - celebrating Life and the Beauty within every part of this amazing Creation!"

The couple died in an automobile accident on Roosevelt Boulevard on Nov. 16, 1971, after Adams suffered a massive heart attack. We don't know when the plaque was placed. However, then-Mayor Hans Tanzler set up the environmental awards in their honor in November 1973 so the plaque likely isn't related to that.

The annual awards, consisting of a limited edition print of his black-and-white drawing titled "Cedar Wax Wings" went to the corporation, organization and individual who made notable efforts to preserve or improve the environment. They were discontinued after several decades.

Lee Adams was a renowned botanical and wildlife painter, and Mimi Adams formerly headed the Jacksonville Air Pollution Control Board.

Both were involved in environmental protection efforts. The Mandarin Community Club, by the way, was an award recipient in 1991.

Karen Roumillat, whose Mandarin roots go back several generations and who is vice president of the Mandarin Museum & Historical Society, said she doesn't know anything about the plaque except it's "very cool." The site previously was a KinderCare Learning Center and a Montessori school, she said. …
