OANNA Lumley can do no wrong in our eyes.

JSeriously, we'd happily just sit on the floor while she read out the phone book, so getting to be her travel companion as she journeys across this stunning country and witnessing the wonders through her eyes is a joy. As is finding out more about Japan - beyond the cliches and the things we think we know from films, books and their weird TV shows.

Yep, Tokyo is crazy busy, the bullet trains are fast and everybody loves Hello Kitty. There's geishas and sushi, sumo wrestlers and tea ceremonies, and the most modern technology.

But there are also icy oceans and tropical islands, beautiful rare birds and wintry forests that look like Narnia, hot springs frequented by furry monkeys and elaborate spiritual ceremonies.

It's also a country that has more than 100 active volcanoes and experiences a thousand earthquakes every year, including the devastating one in 2011 which killed almost 20,000 people and led to explosions and meltdowns at the Fukushima nuclear plant, forcing everyone to evacuate and turning the area into an eerie ghost town. …
