Take the Time to Visit a Local Station Plenty to See and Do through the Week

Article excerpt

A 38-YEAR veteran of the Queensland Ambulance Service, few are more qualified to dish out advice to new recruits than Ipswich Manager of Operations and Resource Readiness, Peter Dennis.

Mr Dennis started with the ambulance as an honorary at Beenleigh as a 23-year-old in 1978.

He became a full-time paramedic the following year - in a time when ambos were still sent out to jobs alone.

"For me it was just about helping people," Mr Dennis said.

"I was raised in a family that volunteered all the time. From the age of 16 I was in the rural fire brigade."

First taking up a role in Ipswich in 1992, Mr Dennis became an area manager here in 98 before returning to Beenleigh for several years.

Ipswich drew him back in 2012 and he now lives and works in what he says is one of the best places for a paramedic to be.

"I enjoy working in the Ipswich area," he said.

"The staffing challenges are broad because of the diversity of the area; you've got the urban and the rural. There are challenges but they are good challenges."

When it comes to guiding new recruits through the early challenges of the job, the veteran has some solid advice.

"Never forget why you've come into the service," he said.

"It's about looking after the community. You can get tied up in the negative aspects of the job but I've always tried to maintain my focus on helping the patients."
