ANNFIELD Plain were relegated from the top flight after a ninewicket defeat at already-relegated Benwell and Walbottle.

Plain batted first and managed just 97, Hassan Raza taking 3-22 and Stephen Reed 4-12.

When the home side batted Raza scored 58 to win the game. thus ensuring City survived to have another season in the top flight after their promotion last season from Division A2.

City lost at Lanchester by 70 runs, so when the result came through from Walbottle Campus that Plain had lost the relief was huge.

Dan Nicotra hit a superb 108 for the home side - with five fours and nine maximums - off 103 balls in a brilliant batting display and Graham Brinton smashed 51 off 64 balls.

When City batted, only Ian Stubbs with 40 and Mohsin Shafiq (38) put up any real resistance and Greg Halliday returned 4-43 for the home side.

City secretary Helen Laverick said: "We are delighted and the relief was immense when the lads heard the result from Benwell and Walbottle. …
