David Smashing 'Em; Squash Teen Impresses for Queensland and Australia

DAVID TURNER is yet another Gladstone product who has made it to Australian representation level in what is a 'golden period' in Gladstone sport.

The 16-year-old was selected in the Australian under-19 Open squash team which played against New Zealand in a recent Test match.

Despite the Kiwis being convincing 25-5 winners and David losing to Gabe Yam, it is another step in the teenager's progression in squash.

"I was surprised and happy and didn't think I would get picked," Turner said.

He was chosen as the number two seed in the Australian side and it comes on the back of his efforts at the Trans Tasman Schools Challenge.

The competition was between Queensland, New South Wales and New Zealand.

"I was in the Queensland Open boy's team seeded at number two and we played for a week," Turner said.

On the second day of that competition, David beat New South Wales' number one seeded Jacob Ford.

"I was pretty happy because he beat me at the Australian Open," he said. …
