Juniors Prepare to Play; Bundaberg Age Open Starts Today

TENNIS: The best juniors from around the state will compete in the region's largest tennis event, the Bundaberg Age Open, over the next three days.

Starting today at four courts around the city, juniors from under-12, under-14, under-16, and under-18 will battle it out to win their age group.

With the Bundaberg Open cancelled earlier this year due to numbers, this is now the biggest event held by the Bundaberg and District Tennis Association.

Tournament Director Murray Whitbread said numbers were good for the event.

"We have exactly the same number of juniors as last year," he said.

"We've got good entries in all age groups and people have come from Mackay, the Sunshine Coast and Brisbane to compete."

On the local front there will be six juniors competing, with Brendon Schultz Bundaberg's best chance of success.

He is the number one seed for the U16 boys and has a bye in round one.

"Schultz is our most likely person (to win) and he should do well," he said. …
