GRACE Payne gave a royal wave to thousands of people on her wedding day.

"I waved to them like the queen - it made my day," Mrs Payne said.

Grace Ruff and Tom Payne's wedding fell on the same day as the 1956 Toowoomba Carnival of Flowers' parade, Saturday, September 22.

Mrs Payne and her father had to travel with procession for a while to get to their destination, St Luke's Church.

This week the Paynes celebrated 60 years of marriage.

They were 16 and 17 when they first met through their siblings.

"My sister was going with his brother and we met at a party," Mrs Payne said.

They also discovered they lived around the corner from each other.

The couple courted for five years.

"Tom was heavily involved in his football," Mrs Payne said.

A couple of months after they were married, Mr Payne was selected for the Australian Rugby League side, the Kangaroos.

He toured England and France from November to January.

"He had a fantastic try in France," Mrs Payne said proudly. …
