End in Sight for IS, Says PM

THE defeat of Islamic State on the battlefield is within sight, Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull has declared on the final day of his US trip.

In Washington yesterday following meetings with US Defence Secretary Ash Carter and the directors of the CIA and US National Intelligence, Mr Turnbull said the US-led coalition was continuing to roll IS back and further gains were expected "over the course of the next six months or so".

"There is a very real prospect of completing the defeat of Daesh in the battlefield, ending their so-called caliphate," he said.

Mr Turnbull would not be drawn, however, on how far away final victory might be.

"We did discuss timing and dates but I'll be circumspect about those discussions if you'll understand why, but there is real progress being made towards the recapture, the liberation of Mosul and of course Raqqa as well," he said.

The PM stressed that the end of IS would not mean the end of the terrorist threat in the West - quite the contrary. …
