Smooth Sailing This Season; Mooloolaba Yacht Club Celebrates Its 50th Season

THE Mooloolaba Yacht Club opened its milestone 50th sailing season yesterday with a traditional blessing and colourful sail past of members' boats.

Pastor Dony Johnson of the KawanaLife Baptist Church made the blessing referencing Psalm 23, before club members saluted, sang and danced as they glided past Mooloolaba Wharf.

Vice-Commodor David Hawthorne said the tradition was designed as a gesture of good luck dating back to Viking days.

All too aware of the dangers skippers regularly face on the waters, club member Mike Hodgson said the sailors could often be quite superstitious.

For him, the tradition was a gesture, but for Fisher MP Andrew Wallace, the blessing was more than that.

"It's not just a tradition; sailing can be very dangerous and I think it's a wonderful expression of our faith to ensure everyone comes home safely," he said.

The event also coincided with the club's open day, where members of the public were invited to jump on board. …
