AUDI has unveiled the next incarnation of its hugely-successful Q5 SUV, which raises the bar in this best-selling sector yet again.

With an emphasis upon uncompromising quality and efficiency, the Q5 has been the world's most popular SUV despite its relatively hefty price tag.

With an increasing number of people prepared to pay for what is generally regarded as the best vehicle of its type in the sector, the new Q5 is even bigger and better.

However, despite its enhanced dimensions, it is lighter by up to 90kg than the current car thanks to the liberal use of aluminium and high-tensile steels.

Whilst continuing with the familiar family face of the existing Q5, it is actually new from the ground up with a focus on connectivity, driver assistance, aeroacoustics and driving dynamics.

Among the latest innovations are the quattro drive system with so-called ultra technology, high efficiency engines, air suspension with damper control and a sophisticated infotainment and assistance system.

The contradictory-named aerodynamically flat front end incorporates Xenon headlights as standard and either LED or high-resolution Matrix LED with dynamic indicators as options.

Inside, a three-spoke multifunction steering wheel is standard and, when it is dark, the optional ambient lighting creates an unusual ambience in 30 different colours.

The rear seat back of the new Audi Q5 is split into three segments, and the seats can be adjusted for rake and recline.

The basic volume of the luggage compartment ranges from 550 litres to 610 litres, which is 10 litres more than in the previous model.

With the rear bench folded flat, this increases to 1,550 litres. Cargo loading is simplified by a poweroperated tailgate fitted as standard, an optional variably folding mat, optional hands-free control of the power tailgate and manual lowering of the body via the optional air suspension. …
