Tanks for Everything: Hidden Weapon in Fight against Floods

A WATER tank that holds half of an Olympic-sized swimming pool of water has been installed in Jarrow in a bid to prevent flooding.

Located under the King George V playing fields, the tank reaches seven metres below the ground and was constructed to reduce the risk of flooding in the area.

Built by Galliford Try Infrastructure Ltd, the 1,150 cubic metre water container is so large that it can hold as much water that has been distributed to runners during the Great North Run over the past 11 years, Gino Salvatore, Galliford Try Infrastructure's business development manager, said.

The container will store intense rainfall water and then pump the water back into the highway's existing drainage system after the rain has reduced a significant amount.

Councillor Allan West, lead member for housing and transport, said: "This area has a history of flooding and the tank will help minimise the risk of further problems.

"The top of the tank is four metres below the fields. …
