NEWS that nine Aussie men had been arrested and held in jail for stripping down to their budgie smugglers at Malaysia's Grand Prix last Sunday caused my mob some alarm.

I mean, when travelling overseas, Aussies have to be mindful and respectful of local customs, but to spend (up to time of print) four days in custody surely is over the top.

The "Budgie Nine" as they are being called, were celebrating fellow Australian Daniel Ricciardo's win in the race by standing in their briefs and drinking beer from their shoes to toast the Aussie F1 driver.

They were arrested for "intentional insult with intent to provoke a breach of the peace".

Turn it up! What has happened to sense of humour - or is that too politically incorrect to say?

Obviously, Malaysia could never host the Olympic Games - what would the swimmers wear?

Yes, the Budgie Nine's red and white stripped briefs had the Malaysian flag on the back, but wouldn't that be a compliment?

Plenty of Australians have applauded their arrest too, they would be the usual wowsers who come out of the closet when such a media item pops up.

"Serves them right," they say, "how dare they enjoy themselves".

Some people won't be happy until everyone has lost their sense of humour and never laughs again.

That same weekend, a mate and I were talking about "the good old days" (I promised myself that I'd never say that cliche) in the 1980s when themed parties were the rage.

He reminded me of the days when the Gladstone Hotel in Ruthven St would host such parties and provide some pretty good bands on the night.

On this occasion, the party was themed Nuns and Priests and attendees turned up in habits and collars.

He and his mate dressed as priests and decided to drop into Tatts Hotel for a quiet ale on their way to The Glad. …
