NESTLED in a sleepy lane and next to a church and giant copper beech tree, Churchwood House looks every inch a country manse that's steeped in history.

But while Keith and Lynne Allan's beautiful property in Scremerston, Berwickupon-Tweed, is full of period features and charm it was, in fact, built less than two decades ago.

The couple spent three years projectmanaging the self-build because they wanted to create a house that made a real impact.

"We wanted to incorporate as many reclaimed materials as we could find and, above all, we wanted the house to look old rather than new," explained Keith."There were sleepless nights over what to call it."

But Keith and Lynne certainly weren't fazed at the challenge of blending old world elegance into a comfortable family home.

As owners of an architectural reclamation yard, they had plenty of stock to draw upon.

The arched front door, which came from a church, heralds the start of a remarkable display of fine materials.

Some are Georgian, like the black and white marble floor in the hall, but there are hand-made bricks and pine beams in the kitchen, with an AGA cooker, as well as a dazzling display of French floor tiles from Burgundy known as tomettes.

And there are plenty of other surprises - like Victorian and Edwardian pine floorboards, doors, door furniture and panelling, cast iron radiators, a Regency fireplace, roll-top baths and an imposing Victorian staircase.

Next to the kitchen is a tiled, north-facing larder, complete with granite floor and marble shelves, while upstairs a screen of yet more leaded glass gives an Arts & Crafts touch to the en suite master bedroom.

There are little quirks that make the property extra special - like the heating pipes lurking under cast iron grills and a secret door in the hall. …
