TRIATHLON: Jan Frodeno staged a remarkable title defence at the Ironman World Championship in Hawaii on Sunday.

The 35-year-old, who spends half of the year at Noosa with wife Emma (nee Snowsill) and their young son Luka, stunned the endu- rance racing scene at Kona.

The German stopped the clock in 8hrs06min30sec, to beat compatriots Sebastian Kienle by 3min32sec and Patrick Lange by another 1min12sec.

He said it was his "best and worst day in one".

"I can't remember when I last suffered so much and right now I'm just so happy," he said.

It was the third fastest winning time in the event's 39-year history.

He produced a 48min02sec swim split over 3.8km, a 4hr29min bike split over 180km and a 2hr45min34sec run split over 42.2km.

Frodeno was met by Emma -- a five-time Noosa Triathlon champion -- at the finish line.

He opted not to defend his 70.3 world championship title on the Sunshine Coast last month to focus solely on defending his title in the full- distance event. …
