Supermoon Strikes a Pose over Coast's Evening Sky; Photographers Keen to Capture Magic Shot

What is a supermoon?

A SUPERMOON is the coincidence of a full moon or a new moon with the closest approach the moon makes to the Earth on its elliptical orbit.

The result is the largest apparent size of the moon as seen from earth.

Technically it's called a perigee-syzygy of the Earth-Moon-Sun system.

IT POSED a striking image as it inched above the horizon to the south-east.

Photographers around the Sunshine Coast made the most of the supermoon, pairing the exciting phenomenon with the Coast's stunning landscapes.

But capturing the perfect landscape with the supermoon is trickier than it might at first seem, as photographer Todd Brewer explained.

"Capturing the super moon, or any moon probably (with detail), requires a decent telephoto lens (zoom lens) to get the focal length required to capture the shots that give you the moons pattern and not just a shiny glow," he said. …
