The meeting of Middlesbrough Council was brought to a halt after people in the packed gallery clashed with councillors.

The main outbursts were made as the Mayor Dave Budd gave his statement and report.

In it he defended actions made relating to the sales of council assets including Acklam Hall and the TAD centre. As reported, concerns have been raised in relation to a number of high-profile property deals.

And he accused fellow Middlesbrough councillors Jon Rathmell and Terry Lawton of launching a campaign on social media of "lies" in relation to several issues affecting the town.

Cllr Lawton had urged the council to guarantee the museum, at Stewart Park would remain open, although the authority has denied there are any closure plans.

Cllr Budd told the meeting that "no final report" had been made and a merger was one of several possibilities which had been put forward. …
