A MULTI-MILLION pound scheme to transform the site of a former North East shipyard is to be launched today.

Places for People and Urban Splash are behind the scheme to bring Smith's Dock, in North Shields, back to life and will be launching their vision today. During a special event, VIP guests and residents will hop aboard the Shields Ferry to see an exclusive preview of a new film about Smith's Dock, narrated by Geordie actress Jill Halfpenny.

They will also be able to see the full expanse of the site from the water.

There, work is already under way on the first 34 houses, a modular housing concept which offers customers a choice of layouts within either two or three storey properties of up to 1,500 sq ft. Speaking ahead of the launch, Urban Splash's Mark Latham said: "We are very excited about Thursday's launch and sharing our vision for the area.

"It's another wonderful milestone for us following on from our recent acceleration of works on site and the appointment of a locally-based sales agent who'll assist us in welcoming the first residents to their new homes early next year. …
