LAST night's debate between the US presidential candidates was generally considered to have been stronger than the previous one until you take the conclusion into consideration. Donald Trump had made an attempt to be more restrained and substantive than in the first couple of rounds but then he blew it. His astonishing refusal to say he would accept the result of the election "I will tell you at the time" suggests, as Hillary Clinton said, a want of confidence in American democracy. And the fact that one of his senior advisers is now saying this is an example of his "wonderful sense of humour" suggests his own camp realises this will have done his campaign real damage.

A refusal to accept the result of an election is a very serious matter. It is not just bad grace; it suggests bad faith on the part of those who have responsibility for the running of the electoral system and primes Trump supporters to withhold their loyalty from a Clinton presidency. …
