Mum of 'Rude' Kids Responds; Coast Readers Post Comments after Woman Pours Her Heart out on Facebook

FIVE years ago and the Coolum mum known as Katie Maree also believed autism was simply a behavioural issue.

It took her months to accept the doctor, paediatrician and psychologist's diagnosis her eldest daughter, now nearly 10, wasn't being naughty when she had a meltdown.

So when an elderly woman confronted her in Coles on Saturday after her daughter swore loudly, a part of her understood.

But the woman's suggestion her daughter "clearly" heard the disgusting language she used in her outburst at home pushed the struggling single mum over the edge.

She burst into tears and, later in the day, she posted a rare comment on a Facebook page about her experience.

The comment, which the Daily highlighted on Monday, sparked many people to air their support for the mum and has given her hope in a sometimes dark and desperate place.

"The responses on the page had me in tears as it was so overwhelming," she said.

"I was feeling alone and so at a loss and all these amazing people on the Sunshine Coast lifted me up."

Katie, who asked for her real name not be used, struggled to accept the diagnoses her daughter had Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and, more recently, high functioning Aspergers.

Her eight-year-old son has also been diagnosed with ADHD.

"I had a lot of trouble to work out that, to get through my head this is a real thing," she said.

"I thought they were naughty kids when they were growing up.

"I thought 'what have I done, how have they turned into little people like this?'.

"It has taken me a while to come to terms that this is a condition.

"They aren't just being naughty kids,they can't process things as well."

A quick dash to Coles for some milk last Saturday led to the ugly incident. …
