WELL, the moment of dread is at hand.

Tomorrow we set sail on P&O Titanic bound for the Melbourne Cup, a cruise I vowed never to be a part of but, in a weak moment, agreed to accompany a few mates.

I love Melbourne Cup week, but my preferred mode of travel has always been Airbus.

You fly, you land, you move about on terra firma for the week.

But a boat?

This trip is something of a 20th anniversary for some of us who took part in our mob's first sporting trek in 1996 when three of us spent a week in Sydney with a mate who was then playing for the Parramatta Eels.

What a disaster!

We hadn't even got off the ground and we were in trouble.

Mick had only recently taken possession of his very first Eftpos card and this was only his second ever flight.

Taxying out to the runway, Mick told me he was short on cash and asked if commercial flights had an ATM.

Now, who could pass up a chance like that? …
