A GUNMAN who pointed a pistol at his own head during a tense armed police stand-off has been jailed for more than three years.

Wide-eyed Daniel Shields, 22, said both "shoot me" and "don't shoot me" to armed response officers during the one-and-ahalf-hour stalemate in Middlesbrough town centre.

He had told friends that night he had a gun, before approaching an 18-year-old woman saying: "You want to get out of the area."

Asked why, he said: "Because people have got weapons like this."

He revealed he was holding what looked like a handgun, Teesside Crown Court heard yesterday.

She walked away, thinking the BB gun was real, panicked and scared by Shields' calm manner.

Armed officers cordoned off the area as they found the troubled gunman near the Holiday Inn putting the imitation firearm to his own head at about 4.40am on August 7. He waved the weapon and kept alternating between urging police to shoot him and telling them not to, said prosecutor Emma Atkinson.

He had the gun in one hand and his phone in the other, telling friends he was surrounded by police as he backed off towards Victoria Square.

Near the mima building he said "I'll do it", putting the barrel in his mouth as concerned officers gave space to the distressed offender.

Shields was near the court building when he tried to run towards Corporation Road. An officer fired a baton round then tackled him as the weapon fell from his grasp.

As he was taken into custody Shields said next time it would not be an airgun and he would not point it at himself.

An air rifle was found in his home. Neither of the weapons were capable of being fired.

He explained he was carrying the pistol because he did not want his sister to find it at her home, where he was living, and he was depressed. …
