A19 Work 'Will Start in 2020' Says MP; PLANS TO END 'NOISE TORMENT'

WORK to improve the A19 between Billingham and Wynyard will definitely start in 2020, an MP has claimed.

Alex Cunningham, the Labour MP for Stockton North, said that Highways Agency engineers had given him the guarantee during a meeting he called to look to end the "noise torment" caused by cars speeding over the concrete section of carriageway.

Mr Cunningham says the project to deal with the noise was prioritised by the then Labour Government in 2008 and would have been completed by now had the project not been axed by the Tories and Liberal Democrats.

The proposed scheme will run in both directions between the A1027 Norton Junction and A689 Wynyard Junction - approximately five kilometres in length. Mr Cunningham says he has been assured that as long as the works continue to demonstrate "value for money" work will begin by March 2020.

The Department for Transport has previously said the timetable for the works had an expected start date for the A19 Norton to Wynyard improvements was "late road period 1" - late in the period April 1, 2015 to March 31, 2020. …
