MUCH like the perfect flat white and the escalating cost of housing, the matter of hemline length is a conversation Londoners will never tire of. But while the inch-to-years ratio of what constitutes an ageappropriate skirt or the subtle differences between culottes and capris are topics we find endlessly fascinating, talk has recently turned from measurements to adornments.

Following a season which saw us get to grips with puddle flares, steppedhem jeans and stirruped ski pants, it seems that trousers this autumn are only as good as their trims. And what began as a trend chiefly preoccupied with denim has now stepped into the smart trouser arena too.

Witness Ellery, the one-time under-the-radar Aussie label which was nearly singlehandedly responsible for last season's collective obsession with cascading ruffle sleeves. This autumn it's Kym Ellery's dedication to adorning our ankles with giant fluted flares that fan out from the knee which has caught our attention.

This voluminous shape is one that requires a confident stride -- and an equally confident choice of footwear. Of course, this is the extreme end of the trend. For the more faint of heart -- or short of leg -- there are plenty of other trims worth trying on for size.

For starters, seek out fellow silhouette iconoclast Jacquemus, which favoured stiff oversized turn-ups on its tailoring this season, before taking a look at New Yorker Rosie Assoulin, who has been championing ruffletrimmed trousers since debuting her line in 2014.

Ever the trend machine, Victoria Beckham has also dipped a toe into the headlining hemline trend this season with a tailored pair of pants that feature appliqued flowers at the hem.

Italy's most playful export, MSGM, has also included some ankle action this season, most notably with a tailored pair of cropped trousers that come embellished with giant ruffles. …
