A CQ man is on a mammoth journey to change the lives of women and children in Africa.

Yeppoon's Walter Harris cycled past Gladstone yesterday as he nears the end of his 1048km triathlon.

The 14-day trip, broken down into a 5km swim, 988km bike ride and 55km run, aims to raise $10,000 for his non-government organisation, Tasimode.

The funds will help establish the organisation's Project Workforce, where single mothers in Africa will farm sunflower seeds to produce sunflower oil.

"I'm doing the triathlon, as founder of the NGO, to show the honesty and integrity I have to this project." Mr Harris said.

"It's a self-sustainable project which will run on its own means."

Mr Harris, 22, said he was inspired after spending six months in Malawi when he was 19.

"I was teaching English and got a different perspective from that," he said.

"I thought why are we teaching English to a culture when they already have their own language. …
