Aitor Backs Adam for England Call-Up

ENGLAND manager Gareth Southgate "wouldn't be making a mistake" if he handed Adam Forshaw a shock national call-up.

That's the view of Boro head coach Aitor Karanka, who responded to reports claiming the 25-yearold is a surprise contender to be named in the next England squad.

Gareth Former Boro boss Southgate will confirm his Three Lions selection on Sunday, with Ben Gibson also heavily tipped for a call-up, and Karanka insists he's not surprised about any accolades that come his players' way. Forshaw had to wait patiently for 18 months before seizing his Boro first-team chance, but has since taken to Premier League life with ease.

Asked if he feels Forshaw is good enough for England, Karanka said: "I don't know because I am the Middlesbrough coach but maybe for someone it is a surprise how good Adam is, but not for me.

"When I signed him two years ago I knew how good a player I was bringing in.

"Now it is easy to say how good a player he is but one year ago, oneand-a-half years ago, even six months ago when he wasn't playing he was the first one who wanted to improve.

"He was the first one to come to my office to show me that he was always ready to play in every single position.

"So for me it is not a surprise if he goes to the national team."

Southgate " Karanka added: "If Gareth called him he wouldn't be making a mistake for sure, because he is taking an amazing player.

"Everyone is now seeing how good Adam is and he would be taking an amazing professional and an amazing person.

"But I don't want us to lose our focus for the game against Manchester City."

The watershed moment in Forshaw's Boro career came against Stoke back in August, when the Liverpudlian replaced the injured Marten de Roon in the Teessiders' Premier League curtain-raiser. …
