Fortune Must Favour the Brave, Says Falcons' Ace; YOUNG EXPECTING MORE IN CUP MEETING WITH SAINTS

THE two-minute silence before Sunday's Anglo-Welsh Cup tie at home to Northampton Saints is a reminder of how sport can sometimes abuse the English language, but you know what Michael Young means when he says Newcastle Falcons have to be braver on the ball. For all Dean Richards' side have started the season well - much better than last - there is a feeling of more to come.

Attacking coach Dave Walder said: "We would be the first to admit we have not played well.

"We have played well in patches but we have not put it together from an attack point of view."

Scrum-half Young is clear - no doubt after having had it drilled into him by Richards and Walder - about what needs to be done with ball in hand.

"We speak a lot about being brave - putting that extra pass in," says the 27-year-old from Hartlepool.

"It is probably more wanting to express yourselves rather than being too caught up in what is going on.

"It is having the bravery to put in that extra pass, to back the players outside, and if we do that we can come away with points.

"For me, we are so close to getting past that point and once we break through it we will be very destructive."

Tomorrow will be a good chance to put the theory into practice.

The Anglo-Welsh is third on Newcastle's three-long list of priorities and their good - despite what Walder says - start to the Premiership has given them more freedom to express themselves.

Young added: "A good start to the season, like we have had, is not something we have had for a long time.

"Getting those points under our belt puts a different outlook on it.

"Last season we did not have our first league win until the start of January, we were fairly desperate for that win but now we can look forward without that shadow over us. …
