Armistice and Remembrance Day Events across North East

THIS Remembrance Day has an extra poignancy as it marks 100 years since the beginning of the Battle of the Somme. As ever, people across the North East will want to turn out and pay their respects.

To help we've put together a list of some of the Armistice and Remembrance Sunday events taking place across the region. While the list isn't exhaustive, it should help you find a service near you to attend.

We are compiling a gallery of photographs from these events to mark the occasion, so please send yours to, telling us where you were and when.

NEWCASTLE Remembrance Day - Sunday November 13 Old Eldon Square, 11am. The parade leaves the Civic Centre at 10.15am, goes along St Mary's Place, down Percy Street, along Blackett Street, to Old Eldon Square for the two minutes' silence and wreath laying. It then goes along Blackett Street, up Northumberland Street, via Northumberland Road, then John Dobson Street and back to the Civic Centre for approximately 11.50am.

Walker, 10am. At the cenotaph on Scrogg Road. Wreaths are laid by local councillors, the Army, Police and local schoolchildren. Gosforth, 10am, Central Park where a short service will be held at the War Memorial. Wideopen: St John's URC, Canterbury Way are holding a display of Remembrance poppies from Thursday 10th to Saturday 12th November, 10am to 4pm each day. Over 1200 poppies made by the congregation and friends of St John's will form a series of decorations throughout the church, together with displays of photographs and military records of those who have served with HM Forces both past and present. All proceeds in aid of the Royal British Legion.

NORTH TYNESIDE Armistice Day - Friday November 11 White Swan Centre, 11.00 am. Post 1945 Jig Saw War Memorial.

Remembrance Day - Sunday 13th November Wallsend, 10.35am. War Memorial off Archer Street. Parade will form up in Richardson Street. Longbenton, 11am. War Memorial St Bartholomew's Church. The parade will form at the Forest Hall Ex-Servicemen's Institute (Formerly RBL Club) Crescent Way North, Forest Hall leaving to parade down Station Road at 10.30am.

North Shields, 11am. War Memorial, Hawkey's Lane. The parade will form in the car park at the Queen Alexandra College campus, leaving at 10.35 am to march down Hawkey's Lane. Whitley Bay, 3pm. War Memorial The Links. The parade will form in Victoria Terrace, leaving at 2.30 pm to parade along Park Avenue.

SOUTH TYNESIDE Armistice Day - Friday 11 November South Shields, 10.30am. Service at St Stephen's Church, Mile End Road.

South Shields, 10.30am. Assemble at the Mission to Seafarers and walk to the Merchant Navy Memorial for a service.

South Shields, 10.50am. Assemble at War Memorial, West Park, for service.

Monkton Village, 10.30am. Assemble at Lord Nelson Public House before marching to the War Memorial in Monkton Village for a service. …
