MIDDLESBROUGH College has been told it must improve.

The latest Ofsted assessment of the college, the biggest provider of further education on Teesside, concluded its overall rating has dropped from good to one which requires action to improve.

Published yesterday, the report said some young people at the college, particularly A-level students, are not achieving the grades of which they are capable.

In particular, the quality of teaching and assessment came under criticism as well as the "effectiveness" of its management. Principal and chief executive Zoe Lewis said they are "disappointed" by the overall grading but have put an action plan in place to respond to Ofsted's recommendations.

The report said the impact of teaching, learning and assessment on students' progress is inconsistent. "As a result, a significant minority of students on study programmes do not make the progress on their courses or achieve the grades that they are capable of given their starting points," it said. "Teachers do not set precise enough targets for students and do not provide them with sufficiently helpful feedback on how they can improve their work and aim for higher grades."

Based at Middlehaven, the college offers further education courses, apprenticeships, employer training, higher education and full and parttime programmes.

In its last inspection in 2011, it was rated good in all but one category.

The latest report, which followed an inspection in September, said senior leaders and managers need to "quicken the pace of improvement" so that achievement increases across the board. …
