THE Answer to every classic rock fan's prayers a decade ago, it's taken a band lauded as the next big thing forever to match talent to commercial success - and the wait goes on.

However, the very fact that The Answer haven't made millions - or made the mistakes associated with rock and roll excess - is why they continue to matter.

It's kept them keen. It's inspired fresh creativity. And it's given this exceptionally gifted quartet the confidence to evolve, new album Solas marking an exciting change of direction and reaffirming fans' faith in a band that knows no fear.

"We don't really pander to anyone," said Neeson. "Our own record company and management didn't hear a note until the album was finished. We recorded it over six months - that's a long time to be off the grid in terms of record companies and management getting itchy feet.

"We just felt that if we sold it to them with enough passion and conviction then they'd trust us. Solas has really rekindled the fire in the band. It was a chance to explore our Celtic heritage and turned out to be an amazing experience."

Drip feeding a few Solas songs - including the empowering title track - during the summer festival season assured Neeson and his band mates that they'd made the right decision. Now it's getting serious.

The band's Newcastle set will revolve around new music with a bulging back catalogue tweaked to complement the very best of Solas.

"It's not so much about how the new stuff fits in," added Neeson.

"It's more about how the old stuff fits in around the songs from Solas! It's very important that we play a bunch of the new songs in the live arena. That music needs to transfer on to the stage.

"And that alone is a challenge - there's more going on within the new album than we can manage as a simple four-piece so we've had to look into using loops and the like. There may also be a couple of guest appearances as and when it's necessary. …
