BEN STOKES and Moeen Ali both scored centuries to help England compile an imposing first-innings total of 537 on the second day of the opening Test against India here.

Moeen, starting the day's play on 99, moved to three figures in the first over of the morning before eventually falling for 117.

Stokes reached his fourth Test hundred during the afternoon session to help England move into a commanding position against the world's No1-ranked Test team.

Both batsmen followed on from Joe Root, who had made 124 on a promising first day for the tourists, and it meant England had three centurymakers in a Test in Asia for the first time since 1961.

The only concern for England was the sight of Stokes leaving the field during the eighth over of India's reply with cramp, a result of his near fivehour stay at the crease. The Durham all-rounder's absence hit England's chances of making any early breakthroughs with the ball. …
