Man Convicted of Attempted Murder in Attack; Dispute Turns into Attack outside Motel in Fernandina Beach

A 39-year-old Nassau County man was convicted Tuesday of attempted first-degree murder and aggravated battery with a deadly weapon after running over and then stabbing his ex-wife's boyfriend in the throat outside a Fernandina Beach motel last April, according to the State Attorney's Office.

Prosecutors said a dispute between Jason Robert Powell and William Sherwood, who was dating Powell's ex-wife, got both kicked out of the Hammerhead Beach Bar on South Fletcher Avenue in Fernandina Beach.

That dispute spilled over into the parking lot of the Days Inn on Sadler Road after Sherwood called Powell, leaving threatening messages, goading him to drive over to the motel where Sherwood was staying, according to police.

Police said Powell went by the motel to confront Sherwood and, thinking Sherwood had damaged his truck's mirror, backed over him. He then got out and stabbed Sherwood in the neck, leaving the knife in his throat, according to police.
