LAST night at the Guildhall, amid the pomp and ceremony of the Lord Mayor's banquet, Theresa May cut a modern figure. Her message less so.

Looking out at the robes and tiaras she addressed her familiar theme of rebalancing the economy to help those casualties of globalisation. On Brexit, she stuck to the line that the UK would create its own model, neither hard nor soft. David Davis was there with her presumably she rotates her three Brexiteers and Liam Fox had his turn in India and promised me everything will be FINE. Of course that's what we all want to hear. May has diagnosed the problem and is inflexible on her path. But we are not clear what it is.

I asked a business chief at the banquet if it were necessary to keep our cards so hidden in negotiations. He saw no reason to. He said it looked to him as if strategy was not being revealed because it did not yet exist.

All we have achieved so far is to irritate the rest of the EU. …
